NYC is getting hotter and hotter, and what better way to sit back and relax than to kick it with this two hour block of pure jams from WMC 2013′s Afternoon Delight party. Mixed by Aaron Dae and DJ Dirty it was the last set of a stacked lineup including Soul Clap, Kenny Dope, Marques Wyatt, Ron Carroll, Jask, Soulmagic, Adam Auburn. Consistently serving up sets of laid back House and Garage tunes, Afternoon Delight was a continuing series held for the last 8 years at WMC, organized by Dae, Dirty, and Adam Auburn with special thought given to the artists involved and the location of the event. This year the whole thing went down as the Grand Finale at the Beach Plaza Hotel in their outside courtyard and went late into the evening.
-Hey guys, take a second to introduce yourselves.

Hi. This is Lars & Maarten, Detroit Swindle. We’re 2 bold middle aged men from Amsterdam with a drinking problem. Was that any good?

-So explain to the readers a little about how Detroit Swindle came together. You are a duo from Amsterdam, where did you meet and how did working together come about?

We were both programming for the same club ages ago, lars for the more Hiphop oriented stuff, and Maarten for the electronic nights.. about 7 years later, we met again doing some promo and DJ-ing and found out we liked the same stuff. How we got to the point of actually getting into the studio, we don’t remember. There were probably some drinks involved though..

- What is your production process like?

Its total chaos.. it can start with just a cool sample, a weird drum pattern or just some messing around with a synth.. there’s never 1 clear start and sometimes, there’s not even an idea. It just forms itself along the way..

- What pieces of equipment are vital to the detroit swindle sound?

Well… We’re really happy with our MFB503 drum computer, but a good sample pack works just as well probably. The whole Fabfilter package really gave a boost to our productions since you can work with it in so much detail..

Photo ® http://wearexyst.co.uk/detroit-swindle-guess-what-ep/

- There seems to be an emphasis on organs and percussive swing. What influences lead you to this sound?

MOTOWN BABY! Its all about the funk for us.

- So your going on a tour this summer, tell us the various places your visiting.

It’s a tiny US / canada tour for now with NYC, Montreal, Boston, Vancouver and Detroit.. This summer, we’ll be all over the place mostly in europe doing all the festivals and spending some time to work on our tan in Ibiza.

-Is this your first time in the united states ever/as a music project?

Yep. Stoked to be here.

- What are some of your favorite clubs in europe/ which clubs in Amsterdam do you play the most?

One of our favourite clubs in Europe is definitely Panorama Bar. A bit of a lame answer, but the club’s special to us. We played our live show there last year only four months after our first release came out and had a crazy party there.. so yeah, the P bar defo has a special place in our hearts but there’s loads of cools clubs we love to come like Bloc in Barcelona, Pratersauna in Vienna or Mint Club in Leeds. All top notch venues where we had really cool shows.. We don’t play a lot in Amsterdam, but we’re mostly playing at studio 80 at the moment, and every now and then in the Chicago Social club. Both good fun with loads of cool people and a nice soundsystem.

– What are your favorite record stores in the area? Is Rush Hour as important as people make it out to be?

Well.. its just a tiny store but it had such a big influence with their label and their vision on electronic music that its pretty much the house epicentre. Since we’re abroad that much, we love to visit records stores in other cities as well. We came across a weird vintage store the other day with loads of cool Stictly Rythm vinyls (and even more really tacky ones, but those were fun to listen to as well).

-What is your strategy when digging for records and sampling?

Hmm.. for crate digging, we just go to 2nd hand shops, but we don’t really have a lot of time for it actually. Its mainly about juno and listening to loads of new stuff online and contacting people whose music we really like… for sampling its all about listening to as much music as we can out of the house genre. Mainly funk, disco, soul and jazz on internet radio and youtube playlists…

- How did you meet Peter (Dirt Crew) and how did it lead to your releases with him?

We both organized parties before we started producing and at some point, lars hooked up with peter for a Dirt Crew label night since a friend of his (Elef) was releasing there.. Next thing we knew we sent Peter our tracks and there you go..

-Thanks for sitting down with us and looking forward to seeing you at Glasslands!

Yay!!

The fantastically varied and talented DJ Koze‘s influence has spanned two decades of dancefloors, and his wide array of talents (a technically gifted DJ, incredible selection and knowledge of sound dynamics) are on full display with his latest full length release, Amygdala (out on Pampa Records). Collecting material from nearly 8 years of collaboration and exploration, this album is perhaps his most friendly to those not familiar with his extensive catalog (the list of what he’s done is really too long to list, but just take a gander at his Discogs page if you’re ready to be overwhelmed). It’s already been warmly received by many in the music world, and has been tipped as one to keep tabs on when the end-of-year lists start coming around at the end of the year. The album features a good amount of collaboration (Matthew Dear, Apparat, Caribou), and moves along at a moderate pace, periodically pausing for dreamlike moments and psychedelic timewarps.
The fantastically varied and talented DJ Koze‘s influence has spanned two decades of dancefloors, and his wide array of talents (a technically gifted DJ, incredible selection and knowledge of sound dynamics) are on full display with his latest full length release, Amygdala (out on Pampa Records).
The album features a good amount of collaboration (Matthew Dear, Apparat, Caribou), and moves along at a moderate pace, periodically pausing for dreamlike moments and psychedelic timewarps. It has a wide appeal and jumps from melodic house to hip-hop to techno, all of it inviting and refreshing. The LP is best appreciated start to finish in one sitting, which reinforces the narrative which has somehow been successfully pieced together over the better part of the last decade. There are layers upon layers of subtlety hidden sounds among the tracks, and it would not be uncommon to pick a different favorite track on each listen. To me, that is the mark of a truly enjoyable album; versatile and introspective, enjoyable in a crowd but even more meaningful when you’re alone with a pair of headphones.

Don’t Lose Your Mind

Royal Asscher Cut

The album unearths some new sounds for Koze, but is very enjoyable and might surprise you; it is definitely worth a listen. And how about that cover? Words aren’t enough sometimes…

For all you fans of the big system/big bass sound, featured on labels like Dirtybird and Trouble & Bass, this one is for you. ClekClekBoom Recordings, run by French Fries (so young and so talented already), has assembled a great compilation of heavy hitting jawns oozing the sound of Paris club life and released it with the incredibly originally name, Paris Club Music: Volume 1. Having not been clubbing in Paris recently (or ever for that matter), I’ll have to take him at his word, but even if he’s lying, I’m buying this sound. The compilation is released on 2LP and a 2CD, with the CD featuring some additional tracks. There’s a mix of back-catalog releases along with some new bits, and it’s an excellent way to introduce yourself to top-notch productions that aren’t the typically French disco-driven or electro-fueled sound.
In the recent glut of individually numbered, hand-stamped limited edition white labels, it’s sometimes tough to weed out what is the filler (and lately there has been a fair amount of crap) and what is the mark of quality music. But in light of the market-flood, Vibes Ltd has managed to hit the mark with their two EPs, Vibes 001 dropping in late 2012, and the followup, Vibes 002 arriving this year. Appropriately titled, the releases provide some fantastic grooves, hanging in the slightly-downtempo/chill end of the pool, mostly in the 105-115bpm range; a little taste of Detroit by way of Europe. Vibes 001 features bits from Deymare, Deso, Janeret and Replika. Here are two great cuts from it: A1 B2 And some fire off of the recently released Vibes 002 A2 Definitely worth picking up if you happen across them whilst digging. 001 just got a limited repress, so if you like it, cop it! Vibes 003 is already around the corner, you can check it out on Soundcloud:

The new home of Red Bull Music Academy New York resides in a repurposed office building on 18th Street in Chelsea and it is impressive to say the least. The space features a main studio with a giant SSL mixing board, several smaller “bedroom” studios, vintage gear for days, a lecture hall and (inexplicably) some mic’ed up birds and fish tanks. The main academy is a month-long workshop for 60 students involving lectures and plenty of studio time to collaborate with one another. The events list for the non-attendee is also strong and can be seen here. Highlights include a special edition of Bunker on May 4th at Public Assembly with Andy Stott, Objekt, and Octo Octa and a massive closing party on the 31st at Output featuring a good chunk of the LIES roster, Mosca, and Kerri Chandler. Check out some pics from the space and some of my favorite past RBMA lectures below. Lecture: Moodymann (London 2010) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo. Lecture: Larry Heard (Seattle 2005) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo. Lecture: Masters at Work (San Francisco, 2012) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo.
